TheMaritime Labour Convention (MLC) shapes many of the working and living protections that matter during a seagoing career. This practical course helps seafarers understand how MLC standards connect to employment agreements, wages, hours of work and rest, accommodation, food, medical care, welfare, repatriation, and onboard concerns. It is designed to make the Convention relevant to daily shipboard decisions without replacing company procedures, emergency instructions, or professional legal advice.
You will begin with the MLC's purpose, scope, five-title structure, and the responsibilities of flag States, port States, shipowners, masters, and crew. The course then examines joining a ship fairly, reviewing a seafarer employment agreement, recognizing recruitment protections, and understanding records that support compliance. You will also explore health protection, occupational safety, social security principles, maritime labour certificates, and declarations of maritime labour compliance.
As the course progresses, you will work through realistic situations involving rest-hour pressure, delayed wages, unsuitable living conditions, medical access, recruitment charges, repatriation concerns, and unresolved complaints. Learn a professional method for identifying an MLC issue, recording objective facts, using the onboard complaint procedure, and escalating concerns through appropriate channels while respecting confidentiality.
