When thirteen year old Tilly and eleven year old Mickey Warren move from the Isle of Wight to a very rural spot in central Devon they find life very disappointing. Before term commences and they join their new school their father had promised to take them exploring the countryside and moors around their new home, but he is in the Royal Navy and has unexpectedly been called back off leave. There mother does her best to entertain them but she is a botanist and is having to finish a report for the charity she works for. However while saving a sea bird, a Little Auk wind blown into their garden in a storm, they and their mother make the acquaintance of Mr Gramandson a local chicken and sheep farmer who owns the large boggy field that lies behind their cottage.
Mr Gramandson's story of will-o-the-wisps in the field that abuts their cottage proves to be a story to cover the fact that it is actually the secret spot to which dragon's eggs are brought to ripen and hatch. The eggs are brought to the bog from a remote Shetland island because since a wealthy American bought the island to use as a holiday home for entertaining large parties of friends they were in danger of being discovered by 'outsiders'. The existence of the dragons and their yearly trip to lay eggs on the island has been guarded for centuries by the families who originally inhabited the island.
Once the eggs have hatched and are strong enough for the journey Mr Gramandson is responsible for transporting them back to the island they came from, Once there instinct will lead the baby dragons to take flight to join their parents who make their home in the arctic wastes.
