The Challenge, which premiered in 1998, is a reality competition series that started as a spinoff of The Real World and Road Rules. Initially, the first season was a non-competitive road trip, but subsequent seasons evolved to feature two teams of former cast members from these shows competing in physical and mental challenges for cash prizes. The show has since expanded its casting pool to include contestants from other reality shows and international versions of the series.
